Memory's an odd thing. I can't remember what I had for lunch yesterday but I can remember an aging vaudevillian I watched on Captain Kangaroo almost fifty years ago: The Banana Man. He wormed his way into my consciousness out of nowhere this evening and in no time flat, via YouTube, I found the old boy in his prime, in a 1939 Red Skelton short film:
-and thirty years later, in one of his Captain Kangaroo appearances. The act was almost
unchanged:
-except that the original performer, A. Robins, died in 1950. Another actor, Sam Levine,
picked up the gig flawlessly.
